South Carolina is phasing out the sale of Bradford and Callery pear trees — they are invasive, structurally unstable, and ecologically harmful. If you are removing a Bradford pear (or several), here are the best replacement options for Upstate SC that provide similar seasonal interest without the structural failure and invasive spread.
Best Bradford Pear Alternatives for Upstate SC
American Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea): Similar size (15–25 feet), spring flowers before the Bradford pear, edible berries in early summer, excellent fall color. Native to Upstate SC, tolerates most soil types. Best overall substitute. Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis): Spring flowering, distinctive heart-shaped leaves, exceptional form. Native. Slightly smaller than Bradford pear. Will not spread invasively. Native hawthorn (Crataegus): Spring flowers, berries for wildlife, interesting form. Multiple native Crataegus species suited to Upstate SC. Thorniness can be a consideration near walkways. Fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus): Stunning white flower display in May, later than Bradford pear. Native, slow-growing, excellent long-term performance. One of the most ornamental native trees in the Southeast.
For Larger Replacement Trees
If the Bradford pear provided significant shade (some reach 30–40 feet), you may want a larger replacement: Tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera): Fast-growing native that provides excellent shade in 10–15 years. Flowers in May-June. Needs room for height (60–90 feet at maturity). White oak (Quercus alba): Long-term investment — grows slowly but provides exceptional structural form and wildlife value. Swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor): Faster-growing than white oak, tolerant of clay soils common in Upstate SC.
SC Bradford Pear Ban — What It Means
South Carolina's Bradford pear phase-out program prohibits the sale of Pyrus calleryana cultivars at garden centers and nurseries. Existing trees can remain but removal is encouraged. The SC Forestry Commission has offered rebate programs for Bradford pear removal and replacement — check with SCFC for current availability.
