Within a single growing season, you can have dozens of sweetgum sprouts across the yard. The solution is herbicide applied to the freshly ground stump surface immediately after grinding, before the wood dries. Applied correctly, this kills the root system and prevents resprout. Surface Roots — What to Do
Sweetgum surface roots are one of the most common complaints about the species. The roots lift pavers, crack driveways, and create tripping hazards across lawns. After removal and stump grinding, surface roots naturally decompose over 3–10 years. If you want the area graded or paved sooner, root grinding (extending the stump grinder outward along major surface roots) can address the most problematic roots.
