How to Identify Red Maple
- 3-lobed leaves with V-shaped notches between lobes; red petioles (leaf stems) even in summer
- Brilliant red, orange, and yellow fall color — one of the earliest fall-coloring trees in SC
- Smooth gray bark on young trees; scaly and rough on mature specimens
- Small red flowers in late February before any leaves — one of the earliest blooming native trees
- Paired samaras (helicopter seeds) in spring, also red before maturity
The Co-Dominant Stem Problem in Developer-Planted Red Maples
Red maple grows fast — 3–5 feet per year in ideal conditions. Developer-planted red maples go in as 1.5-inch caliper nursery stock and reach 20–30 feet within a decade. The problem: fast-growing red maples frequently develop co-dominant stems — two or more main trunks of equal diameter diverging from the same point, often with included bark trapped at the union. This is not a random defect; it is a predictable consequence of the way red maple grows, especially from nursery stock that was not structurally pruned before planting. Co-dominant stems with included bark are the primary failure mechanism in 10–20 year old red maples across Upstate SC subdivisions. We see this pattern repeatedly in Simpsonville, Mauldin, and Greer neighborhoods developed in the 1990s–2010s.
Identifying and Managing Included Bark
Included bark at a co-dominant union looks like a seam or crack running between two major stems. Instead of a smooth branch collar, you see a V-shaped juncture where the bark from each stem is compressed between them. The included bark prevents the stems from forming a proper structural bond, and the union becomes the point of failure. Early identification and structural pruning — selecting one stem as the dominant leader and removing or subordinating the competing stem — can prevent failure if done before the stems exceed 3–4 inches in diameter. Once co-dominant stems are large (6+ inches each), the options are cabling to support the union, removal of one stem, or removal of the entire tree. Proactive assessment of fast-growing red maples at 8–12 years old allows intervention before the structural defect becomes a hazard.
Surface Roots and Lawn Conflicts
Red maple is a relatively shallow-rooted species. In compacted urban soils or in yards where the root system has been forced to the surface by soil conditions, red maple produces large surface roots that conflict with lawnmowers, create trip hazards, and occasionally extend toward foundations or hardscape. Surface root problems cannot be solved by cutting the roots — root cutting within the structural root zone of the tree destabilizes it. The appropriate responses are mulching over the root zone (eliminates lawnmower conflicts), accepting the root surface as a landscape feature, or removing the tree if the root system is incompatible with the site use.
