White oak (Quercus alba) is the defining canopy tree of mature Upstate SC residential neighborhoods. Individual specimens live 300–600 years and reach 80–100 feet. Inside Greenville city limits, every tree removal requires a permit; large, old white oaks may also be protected as heritage trees, which the City determines and which carry additional mitigation. They are among the highest-value trees on a residential property — for ecological reasons, property value, and shade. Removal should be the last resort after ISA assessment.

White Oak's Heritage Tree Status in Greenville
Inside Greenville city limits, every tree removal requires a permit — fast and easy to get. Separately, the City of Greenville protects certain trees as heritage trees. The City of Greenville Development Services office ((864) 467-4476) determines whether a specific tree qualifies as a heritage tree; do not assume from size alone. When a tree is a protected heritage tree, removal carries mitigation: replacement at a 1:1 caliper-inch ratio, or a fee of $50 per caliper inch into the Greenville Tree Fund if not replaced, plus a fine of $45 per caliper inch on top of the mitigation. An arborist report is not required for the permit, but it can reduce or eliminate fees on a tree that looks healthy yet is in poor health. Common Problems in Upstate SC White Oaks
Armillaria root rot: common in older white oaks, presenting as white mycelial fans under root collar bark and honey-colored mushrooms at the base in fall. Armillaria is not always fatal but indicates structural root compromise. Hypoxylon canker: secondary pathogen that attacks drought-stressed or construction-impacted white oaks, showing as silver-grey powdery patches on upper bark. No treatment; affected trees should be assessed for removal risk. Bacterial leaf scorch: chronic vascular disease causing summer leaf margin browning, advancing inward over years. Internal decay: cavities in old white oaks are normal and don't automatically indicate removal need — the structural significance depends on where and how large. A written arborist assessment determines whether a specific cavity is a structural problem.
Pruning White Oaks: Timing Is Critical
White oaks must be pruned in late winter only — December through February in Upstate SC. Pruning after April 1 creates fresh wounds during peak flight activity of the ambrosia beetle, which transmits fungal pathogens into fresh oak wounds. The risk of oak wilt (not yet established in SC but present in NC) adds another reason to avoid warm-season pruning. Emergency pruning (storm damage, hazardous limbs) has no seasonal restriction — wound dressings reduce disease exposure risk on emergency cuts outside the winter window. Never prune more than 25% of live crown in a single visit.
Protecting White Oaks During Construction
White oak root systems extend 1–3 times the tree's height in radius. Construction within this zone — trenching, grading, compaction from equipment staging — causes root damage that shows as gradual crown decline 2–5 years after the disturbance. By the time the decline is visible, the damage is already done. For construction projects near significant white oaks: establish a tree protection zone (TPZ) at 1 foot radius per inch of trunk diameter before any grading begins. No grade changes, no trenching, no compaction, no material storage within the TPZ. An ISA Certified Arborist consultation before construction begins is the only way to protect established white oaks from construction damage.
