Bacterial leaf scorch (BLS), caused by Xylella fastidiosa, is a chronic vascular disease of oaks and other hardwoods transmitted by sharpshooter leafhoppers and spittlebugs. It is widespread in Upstate SC, particularly on willow oaks (Quercus phellos) and water oaks (Quercus nigra). Unlike oak wilt, which kills rapidly, BLS causes slow, multi-year decline — symptomatic trees may live 10–15 years before dying. The diagnostic pattern is marginal leaf browning that begins earlier in summer than typical drought scorch and follows a necrotic band bounded by a yellow halo between healthy green and dead tissue.
How to Identify Bacterial Leaf Scorch
- Marginal leaf scorch — browning at the leaf edges progressing inward, typically starting mid-summer before drought would normally cause scorch
- A yellow or reddish band (chlorotic halo) between healthy green tissue and the necrotic brown margin
- Symptoms appear first on older, interior leaves of the branch and spread to the full branch
- Affected branches show consistent symptom patterns year after year, with progression to additional branches over multiple seasons
- Premature leaf drop starting in August, followed by reduced leaf size and early fall color in subsequent years
How BLS Differs From Drought Stress and Oak Wilt
Misdiagnosis is common with bacterial leaf scorch because all three conditions — BLS, drought stress, and oak wilt — produce leaf browning. The differences: drought stress produces uniform, late-season scorch affecting all parts of the tree simultaneously without a yellow halo boundary, and the tree typically recovers after rain. Oak wilt kills red oaks in weeks with a bronze-browning from branch tips inward, and dead leaves stay attached. Bacterial leaf scorch shows a consistent necrotic band with a yellow halo, appears annually in the same branches progressing to new branches, affects willow oaks and water oaks preferentially, and shows multi-year slow decline rather than rapid death. BLS diagnosis can be confirmed by laboratory testing of leaf tissue.
Willow Oaks and BLS in Upstate SC
Willow oaks are the predominant street tree in Greenville's established neighborhoods and commercial corridors — they line downtown streets, office park driveways, and residential subdivisions throughout the county. BLS is extremely common in willow oak street trees, where the combination of root restriction, soil compaction, and heat stress from pavement creates conditions that make trees more vulnerable to Xylella progression. Many willow oaks in Greenville showing annual leaf scorch, reduced crown density, and progressive dieback have BLS as an underlying condition. This does not necessarily mean immediate removal — BLS-affected trees can remain stable for years — but it does mean the management approach should account for the chronic nature of the decline.
Management: Reducing Stress to Slow Progression
There is no cure for bacterial leaf scorch. Management focuses on reducing tree stress to slow the rate of progression. The most effective interventions for willow oaks in urban settings: deep mulching of the root zone to maintain soil moisture and reduce compaction; avoidance of root zone disturbance; irrigation during extended drought periods; and removal of dead branches to reduce hazard and improve tree appearance. Trunk injections of oxytetracycline have shown some effectiveness in slowing symptom expression, though they do not eliminate the pathogen and must be repeated annually. For high-value specimen willow oaks, this treatment may be worth pursuing. For declining street trees in poor sites, management may be a holding action before eventual replacement.
