Seven signs a tree needs to be removed: dead or dying crown, significant trunk decay or cavities, leaning more than 15 degrees from vertical, major structural cracks at branch unions, root damage or heaving soil at the base, repeated storm failure history, and proximity to a structure without adequate clearance. Any one of these may indicate removal. Multiple signs together almost always do.
Sign 1: Dead or Dying Crown
A dead crown — no leaves in growing season, or leaves that brown and hold through fall without dropping (called "flagging") — indicates the tree's vascular system has failed. Partial crown death (one-third or more of the crown dead) typically means the root system or trunk cannot sustain the living portions. Trees with dead crowns are hazardous because dead wood becomes brittle and unpredictable within 1–3 years.
Sign 2: Significant Trunk Decay or Cavities
Soft spots, hollow sounds when tapped, fungal conks (shelf fungi) at the base or on the trunk, and visible cavities all indicate internal decay. The critical question is whether enough sound wood remains to support the tree's weight in a storm. ISA-standard assessments use a 30% cross-sectional sound wood threshold: if more than 70% of the trunk is decayed, removal is the standard recommendation. This requires a professional assessment — visible decay is only one indicator.
Sign 3: Lean Greater Than 15 Degrees
Trees lean for different reasons. A gradual, lifelong lean is usually not a concern — the tree's root system has compensated. A sudden lean (developed after a storm or within the past 1–2 seasons) is a structural emergency. The root plate has partially lifted, and the tree is at high risk of complete failure. Any sudden lean toward a structure or occupied area should be evaluated immediately.
Sign 4: Major Cracks at Branch Unions
Co-dominant stems (two main trunks of equal size growing from one base) with included bark are the single most common cause of major tree failure in Upstate SC. Included bark — bark tissue trapped between two growing stems — cannot form a proper union. The crack grows with the tree and eventually leads to catastrophic splitting. Co-dominant stems at the main trunk cannot be corrected by trimming. Cabling can manage the risk; removal eliminates it.
Sign 5: Root Damage or Soil Heaving
Severed or damaged roots (from construction, trenching, or soil compaction) reduce a tree's ability to anchor and feed itself. Signs include soil heaving on the opposite side from a lean (the root plate is lifting), mushrooms or fungal growth at the base (root rot), and general decline in crown density over 2–3 seasons. Root damage is often irreversible — a tree that has lost significant root anchoring is a fall risk.
Sign 6: Repeated Storm Failure
A tree that has lost major branches in multiple storms is telling you something about its structural integrity. This is especially true for Bradford pears and other ornamentals with inherently weak wood. If the same tree is being cleaned up after every significant storm event, the remaining structure is progressively weaker. At some point, the cost and risk of the next cleanup exceeds the cost of removal.
Sign 7: Proximity to a Structure Without Adequate Clearance
A tree that has grown into or directly over a structure creates liability regardless of health. Insurance adjusters and courts look at whether a homeowner knew a tree was in a hazardous position — proximity itself is a risk factor. Trees over rooflines, within falling distance of occupied structures, and growing into foundation systems should be evaluated even if the tree appears healthy.
